How To Turn Renting Into Owning.
July 8, 2010 by CHRA Broker · 3 Comments
I’ve always thought its better to own a home, hands down. I am a do it yourself junkie and while I can create something new in an apartment, it just feels better when I create or repair something in a home that I own.
But what about those of you that are renting a house? It feels nice to live in a house, not an apartment, but wouldn’t it be nice to own it? What would one need to do if one is interested in buying one of these fabulous foreclosure deals we keep hearing about?
I know I’ve blogged about the highlights of Rent-to-Own homes, but I’ve never really given a plan on how to actually go about it. Well, it would take me a while to go over all the details. As a real estate broker I can easily discuss it with you. I’m pretty sure I can answer all your questions , faster than you can fire them at me! Come to think of it, I can do a series of blogs based on steps to take to get to the ownership rainbow. Or I could write a book about it.
Writing a book would be hard, writing a series is a little easier but who wants to wait for a week to see what the next step is? Finally, if everyone called for a face to face meeting, there wouldn’t be enough hours in the day. I can, however, suggest a book that I feel gives you all

the pertinent details about renting a home and then purchasing, and the steps involved.
Robert Irwin’s Rent to Own is one of the most complete guides to renting to own. It covers everything, and is a complete step by step guide on how to go about the renting to own process, including tips about credit, contracts, down payment from rent, and whether you can really afford it.
It really is nicer to own your home, but as we see in the current mortgage meltdown, it is better to be fully prepared, no doubt about it. A first time home buyer who has never lived in a house wouldn’t fully understand what it takes to run a house, or what the real costs are. My new mantra is “be prepared”, which means not going into a major purchase like buying a home, just because everyone else you know is doing it.
I will do today what others wont so I can do tomorrow what others can’t.
Powerful words!
